Using your Digital Network

Over the past few months, I have been on the job search for internships around the country. From digital marketing agencies to design studios, the job search is exhausting and sometimes leaves many of us feeling hopeless.

A old man once told me there is nothing more powerful than your network. To this day, it has stood true beyon

d all measures.

So, many people ask-- What if I don’t have any connections to that dream job? What if none of my connections connections know people there? What if i’ve applied over three times with no call back?

The truth of the matter is, most of the time when you don’t have a connection, your resume never leaves that HR’s desk. It sits in the other stack of 100 applicants patiently waiting to hear back from a company they so eagerly want to work with. So what do you do?

LinkedIn, Instagram, Flicker, and more.

In our digital world, we have the ability to see inside companies and their daily activities through their company instagrams, LinkedIn's, Snapchats, and youtube accounts. As a follower, you are the “first to know” about company events, new clientele, and job postings. What is also allows you to do, is invite them into your world if you are persistent.

My approach is transparent and interactive.

I put all my social sites on public, and link them directly to my personal website. A personal website is great for business use in any industry. What a personal website does is bring that flat, plain resume to life. It connects a person with that resume, drawing the talent recruiter into investing in a person.

Furthermore, I interact with their LinkedIn’s by commenting or sharing articles they post that I find interesting to share with my followers. It notifies the company that you are engaging in their content, while also growing your knowledge in their media approach.

I also spend some time reviewing their talent managers profiles, along with anyone specific in my department. This allows you to understand their previous work, how they got to where they are, and a deeper understanding as to what they do in their position currently. It also notifies them that you are looking at their profile-- which can sometimes trigger your name when they are sorting through resumes.

This approach may not work for everyone. But using the tools that we specialize in, can go a long way in building your network digitally.

Until then, continue waiting for that internship interview that may never come. Harsh, huh?

XO,

Aubrey Moller
